Decades of productions have used Ouarzazate and its surrounding kasbahs and desert to stand in for ancient Egypt, Rome, Tibet and beyond, and the town now offers two ways to step inside that film history — though they are quite different experiences. Atlas Corporation Studios is the big working studio a few kilometres out of town: guided tours lead you around expansive standing sets, painted backdrops, props and scenery left over from major productions, much of it open-air and on a scale that takes a couple of hours to wander (plus the transport out and back). The Cinema Museum (Musée du Cinéma) sits right in the centre, directly opposite the Taourirt Kasbah: it is an indoor collection housed in a former studio, gathering film props, costumes, vintage cameras and equipment and some reconstructed sets in a smaller, quicker-to-visit space. One is a back-lot adventure out of town; the other is a compact, central browse through the kit and craft of moviemaking. Opening hours and admission can change, so check current details before you go.
