Frequently asked

Planning your southern Morocco itinerary.

How many days do I need for a southern Morocco itinerary?

It depends on how far south you want to go. Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and the Skoura palm grove can be reached from Marrakech as a busy day trip or, more comfortably, an overnight, since the drive crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Adding the Dadès and Todra gorges, the Valley of the Roses or the dunes turns it into a two- to four-day loop. Continuing all the way to the Sahara at Merzouga or Erg Chigaga usually needs at least three days.

How does Ouarzazate work as a gateway to the desert and the south?

Ouarzazate sits just south of the High Atlas and is the natural staging point for the south, which is why it's often called the gateway to the desert. From here the main routes branch out: east along the Dadès and Todra gorges toward Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, and south through the Draa valley and Zagora toward M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga. Many itineraries pause here to break the long drive from Marrakech and to visit the kasbahs and film studios before pushing on to the dunes.

Are these itineraries private and can they be customised?

Yes. Every itinerary here is a private trip run by our local team, and each one is a starting point rather than a fixed package. You can change the dates, add or drop the Sahara, swap the gorges for the Draa valley, slow the pace with an extra night, change a kasbah stay, and combine the south with Marrakech or Fes. Tell us your cities, dates and travel style and we send a written day-by-day plan built around them.

What does a typical day on a southern route look like?

Days in the south are built around the drive between valleys, with scenic stops rather than long unbroken stretches: a kasbah such as Ait Ben Haddou, a palm grove, a gorge walk, or a cooperative along the way. You travel by private vehicle with a driver-guide, with time to stop for photos and tea. Desert days end at a camp before sunset and start early for sunrise. Nothing is rigid; any day can be slowed down or reshaped.

How far ahead should I book, and how do I get a price?

Earlier is better for high season (spring and autumn) and holidays, when good kasbah stays and desert camps fill up, but shorter lead times can often still be arranged. Pricing depends on your exact dates, group size, choice of accommodation and how far south you travel, so we quote each itinerary individually rather than listing a fixed figure. Send us your plan and we reply with an itemised written quote within 24 hours.
