Why Essaouira
Three hours west of Marrakech, Essaouira (Mogador on old maps) is the easiest coastal break in the country and the obvious place to unwind before or after the long, hot drive south to Ouarzazate. Its 18th-century ramparts have stood in for Astapor in Game of Thrones — and like Aït Ben Haddou it is film country, though here the backdrop is Atlantic surf rather than desert. The blue-and-white medina is small, walkable and far quieter than Marrakech, and its windy beach is a year-round magnet for kite-surfers. Essaouira is also the gateway to the argan-oil road and the oyster lagoons of Oualidia.

Pick fish off the morning's catch and have it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — Morocco's freshest seafood, no question.
Visit a women's co-op on the road in from Marrakech and see argan oil pressed by hand from the kernels.
Long empty beaches south, and an oyster-farming lagoon north.

Not directly — they sit on opposite sides of Marrakech, the coast to the west and Ouarzazate to the south-east. Most travellers use Essaouira as a relaxing Atlantic bookend before committing to the southern kasbah loop, rather than linking the two in one drive.
Yes, but it's windy and the Atlantic is cool year-round — a refreshing change after the heat of the pre-Sahara. For warmer, calmer water head south to Sidi Kaouki or further to Agadir.
