Why Marrakech
For travellers bound for Ouarzazate and the southern kasbah route, Marrakech is the start line. It sits on the northern side of the High Atlas, and the famous Tizi n'Tichka road climbs out of the city before dropping to the door of the desert four hours south. Most visitors land here first, spend a couple of days inside the ochre walls, then point the car toward the pass. Within the UNESCO medina lie the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the Koutoubia minaret, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Majorelle and Yves Saint Laurent gardens — a different Morocco entirely from the earthen ksour waiting beyond the mountains.
What to see
UNESCO square at dusk and the souks of Semmarine and Mouassine — the urban counterweight to the silent ksour of the south. A licensed guide on day one lays the map.
19th-century palace courtyards and the rediscovered Saadian necropolis behind the Kasbah mosque — the same dynasty whose fortified architecture you'll trace south past Ouarzazate.
The cobalt-blue garden Yves Saint Laurent bought in 1980, plus the museum charting his Marrakech years — a worthwhile last stop before the long drive over the Tichka.
The 2,260m pass that links Marrakech to Ouarzazate: switchbacks, Berber villages and the moment the green northern slopes give way to the ochre pre-Sahara.
An hour into the mountains for a half-day: Berber villages, waterfalls and a riverside lunch before you commit to the desert road.

Two to three full days covers the medina, the major monuments and the gardens. Many travellers treat Marrakech as the front half of a southern loop, then drive the Tizi n'Tichka to Ouarzazate and the kasbah road on day three or four.
About four hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m). It is one of Morocco's great mountain roads, with the option to detour to Aït Ben Haddou and Telouet on the way down — never rush it.
March–May and September–November bring warm days (22–28°C) and cool evenings, ideal for pairing the city with a southern desert run. June–August can reach 40°C; December–February is mild but evenings are cold and the high pass can see snow.
