The short answer

An Aït Ben Haddou tour from Marrakech is a full-day private journey across the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou — a complete earthen village of stacked kasbahs and Morocco's most-filmed location. It is about 190 km and 3.5–4 hours each way. You can run it as a long round-trip day, or — far better — as a one-way crossing that adds the Telouet kasbah and the Ouarzazate film studios and lets you sleep beside the ksar for a crowd-free dawn. Every itinerary on this page is privately operated by a local driver-guide and fully customisable, from $220 per person.

The journey

What's on the road from Marrakech?

The Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m)

The climb out of Marrakech twists up through Berber villages and switchbacks to Morocco's highest major road pass. We stop for the high-Atlas panoramas and, if you like, an argan-oil cooperative run by a women's collective.

Telouet — the hidden Glaoui kasbah

A short detour off the main road reaches Telouet, the half-ruined palace-kasbah of the Glaoui pashas. Plain earth walls hide rooms of painted cedar and zellij tilework — one of the most surprising interiors in the south, and skipped by most day-trippers.

Aït Ben Haddou — the UNESCO ksar

The headline. You cross the Ounila riverbed on foot and climb the lanes to the hilltop granary for the full panorama. A valley guide reads the rammed-earth architecture and points out the corners used in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones.

Ouarzazate's 'Ouallywood' studios

Thirty kilometres on, Ouarzazate is one of the world's largest film-studio towns. If you overnight rather than rush back, you can walk the standing Egyptian, Roman and Tibetan sets at Atlas Studios — a natural add-on for film buffs.

Who it suits

Is this trip right for you?

A great fit if you…

  • Want the single most iconic kasbah scenery in Morocco
  • Prefer a private car and a flexible pace to a packed coach
  • Love photography, film locations or earthen architecture
  • Are moving from Marrakech toward the desert anyway
  • Want a guide who can read the kasbahs, not just drive

Consider an overnight if you…

  • Don't want 8 hours of driving in a single day
  • Want Aït Ben Haddou at dawn, before the coaches arrive
  • Hope to add Telouet, the film studios or the gorges
  • Are continuing to Ouarzazate, the Draa or the Sahara
  • Are travelling with children or prefer a gentle rhythm

Planning the wider route? Read our guide to Aït Ben Haddou, or explore the Ouarzazate region destinations to pair it with the Dadès and Todra gorges.

Practical notes

Before you set off.

  • Best months: March–May and September–November for clear light and comfortable temperatures. Winter is lovely but watch the pass for snow.
  • Start early: A round-trip day means a 7–8am pickup. For the dawn ksar, the one-way overnight crossing is the better-paced choice.
  • The drive: Smooth tarmac but winding. If you're prone to car sickness, sit up front and tell your driver — we stop as often as you need.
  • Group size: Itineraries run 1–6 travellers privately. Larger groups and families are easy to arrange — just ask.

FAQ

Aït Ben Haddou from Marrakech — your questions.

How long does an Aït Ben Haddou tour from Marrakech take?+

A full day. The drive from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Aït Ben Haddou is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours each way, so a day trip runs about 11 to 13 hours door to door. If you want time to climb the ksar slowly, add Telouet and reach Ouarzazate's film studios, we recommend the one-way Kasbah Road crossing with an overnight in Ouarzazate instead of racing back the same day.

Is it better to do Aït Ben Haddou as a day trip or stay overnight?+

If you only have one day, the round-trip works and you will still climb the UNESCO ksar. But it is a long day in the car. Most travellers who care about photography and the kasbahs prefer the one-way Marrakech → Ouarzazate crossing: same scenery, Telouet kasbah added, and you sleep near the ksar so you can return at dawn before the coaches.

How far is Aït Ben Haddou from Marrakech?+

About 190 km by road, but the distance is deceptive — the route crosses the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka, Morocco's highest major pass at 2,260 m, on a winding mountain road. Plan for 3.5 to 4 hours of driving each way, with stops.

What will I actually see at Aït Ben Haddou?+

A complete earthen ksar — a fortified village of stacked mud-brick kasbahs on the old caravan road, UNESCO-listed since 1987. You cross the riverbed, climb the lanes to the hilltop granary (agadir) for the valley panorama, and a local guide explains the rammed-earth architecture and which films were shot there (Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones and more).

Can I add the Atlas film studios in Ouarzazate to the trip?+

Yes. Ouarzazate, 30 km past Aït Ben Haddou, is nicknamed 'Ouallywood' for its working film studios with standing Egyptian, Roman and Tibetan sets. It pairs naturally with the ksar if you stay overnight rather than rushing the round trip. Tell us and we will build it into your itinerary.

Is the tour private, and can I customise the stops?+

Every itinerary we run is 100% private — your own driver-guide, your own vehicle, your own pace. We never pool travellers. You can add Telouet, the film studios, an argan cooperative, the Ounila valley back road, or extend into the Dadès and Todra gorges. We re-quote any change in writing within 24 hours.

When is the best time to make this trip?+

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal: clear light, comfortable temperatures, and the Atlas snow gone from the pass. Summer is hot in the valley but mornings are fine; winter is beautiful but snow can briefly close the Tizi n'Tichka, in which case your driver adjusts timing or routing.

What is included and how much does it cost?+

Our Aït Ben Haddou itineraries start from $220 per person and include a private English-speaking driver-guide, vehicle with fuel and tolls, hotel pickup, water on board and a 24/7 concierge. Entrance fees and listed activities are included per itinerary. International flights, insurance and tips are not. See the real tours below for each price.
