Merzouga vs Zagora from Ouarzazate: Which Desert Route to Take?

From Ouarzazate the Sahara splits two ways: south-east along the kasbah road to Merzouga's towering Erg Chebbi dunes, or south down the Draa valley to Zagora and the remote Erg Chigaga. The drive, the dunes and the experience differ sharply.

Ouarzazate is the hinge of the southern desert circuit, and from it the Sahara lies in two distinct directions. East and then south-east runs the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' through Skoura, the Dadès and Todra gorges and the Ziz valley to Merzouga — gateway to Erg Chebbi, the 22 km dune sea whose ridges reach 150 m and glow amber at dawn. It is the longer drive (around 360 km from Ouarzazate) but ends at Morocco's most spectacular and accessible dunes, with a paved road right to the sand. The other route heads due south down the Draa valley — 130 km of date palms and mud-brick kasbahs — to Zagora and, beyond it, M'Hamid, the launch point for the remote Erg Chigaga, reachable only by 4×4 across open piste. Zagora is closer and quieter; Merzouga is grander and more developed. The choice is really about time and temperament.

Our verdict

Which should you choose?

If your dream is the classic Sahara — vast orange dunes, a camel silhouette at sunrise, a comfortable camp under the Milky Way — take the longer eastern route to Merzouga, ideally over three days so the Dadès and Todra gorges become part of the journey rather than a blur. If you have less time, or you want fewer people and the lush Draa valley, head south to Zagora; push on to M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga by 4×4 for genuine remoteness. The grand option, of course, is a loop: out via one and back via the other.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Is Merzouga or Zagora closer to Ouarzazate?

Zagora is much closer — about 165 km (3 hours) south via the Draa valley. Merzouga is around 360 km (6 hours) to the south-east via the Dadès and Todra gorges. This distance difference is the single biggest factor for travellers short on time.

Which has better dunes, Merzouga or Zagora?

Merzouga's Erg Chebbi has the tallest and most dramatic dunes — up to 150 m over a dense 22 km field. The dunes near Zagora are smaller; for true big dunes on that side you must continue to M'Hamid and the remote Erg Chigaga, reachable only by 4×4.

Can I do a desert tour from Ouarzazate in two days?

A two-day trip works well for Zagora and the Draa valley. Merzouga really needs three days from Ouarzazate (or Marrakech) because of the longer drive — most tours break the journey with a night in the Dadès valley.

Do I need a 4×4 for either desert?

Not for Merzouga — a paved road runs to the edge of Erg Chebbi. For Erg Chigaga near Zagora you do: it lies about 40 km of piste beyond M'Hamid and requires a 4×4 or a local driver with one. Zagora town itself is reachable in a normal car.

What is the best time for a desert tour from Ouarzazate?

October to April. Daytime temperatures are comfortable (15–28°C) and nights are cold but clear, ideal for stargazing. Avoid July and August, when daytime heat in the dunes can exceed 45°C.
