Ouarzazate is the hinge of the southern desert circuit, and from it the Sahara lies in two distinct directions. East and then south-east runs the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' through Skoura, the Dadès and Todra gorges and the Ziz valley to Merzouga — gateway to Erg Chebbi, the 22 km dune sea whose ridges reach 150 m and glow amber at dawn. It is the longer drive (around 360 km from Ouarzazate) but ends at Morocco's most spectacular and accessible dunes, with a paved road right to the sand. The other route heads due south down the Draa valley — 130 km of date palms and mud-brick kasbahs — to Zagora and, beyond it, M'Hamid, the launch point for the remote Erg Chigaga, reachable only by 4×4 across open piste. Zagora is closer and quieter; Merzouga is grander and more developed. The choice is really about time and temperament.
