Ouarzazate and Zagora are the two anchor towns of Morocco's pre-Saharan south, 165 km apart down the Draa valley. Ouarzazate, just over the Tizi n'Tichka from Marrakech, is the larger and better-equipped: it has the film studios, the Taourirt Kasbah, the nearby UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and the Fint oasis, plus a good range of hotels and restaurants. It is the natural base for exploring kasbah country and the obvious first stop on any southern circuit. Zagora is smaller, hotter and more frontier-like — the end of the tarmac for many, famous for the old 'Timbuktu, 52 days' camel-caravan signpost — and it sits much closer to the dunes, with the palm groves of the Draa at its doorstep and M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga beyond. Ouarzazate offers more to do; Zagora offers quicker, quieter access to the sand.
