Tizi n'Tichka Drive vs Fly: Reaching Ouarzazate from Marrakech

There are two ways from Marrakech to Ouarzazate: a four-hour drive over the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass, or a short hop to Ouarzazate Airport. One is a destination in itself; the other is a time-saver with caveats.

The High Atlas stands between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, and the way you cross it sets the tone for the whole southern trip. The overland route follows the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka — at 2,260 m the highest major road pass in Morocco — a serpentine climb past Berber villages, argan and walnut groves, roadside fossil and mineral stalls, and grand mountain views, with the option to detour to Telouet and Aït Ben Haddou on the southern side. Recent upgrades, including new tunnels and dual-carriageway sections, have cut and smoothed the drive, but it remains around four hours of winding road. The alternative is to fly: Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) receives occasional flights, mostly via Casablanca, turning the crossing into a brief hop. The catch is frequency — schedules are thin and indirect, so flying often saves less real time than it appears, and it skips the scenery entirely.

Our verdict

Which should you choose?

For nearly every traveller, drive the Tizi n'Tichka. The pass is one of the most memorable roads in Morocco, and breaking the journey at Telouet and Aït Ben Haddou turns a transfer into a highlight. Hire a private driver or join a tour so you can watch the scenery and stop at will. Flying to Ouarzazate only makes sense in narrow cases — a perfectly timed schedule, severe motion sickness, or a desperately tight itinerary — and even then the indirect routing often erodes the time you hoped to save. The journey here is genuinely part of the destination.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How long does the Tizi n'Tichka drive take?

Marrakech to Ouarzazate over the Tizi n'Tichka is about 200 km and takes roughly 4 hours of driving, before stops. Recent road improvements and new tunnels have made it faster and smoother, but it is still a winding mountain pass.

Is the Tizi n'Tichka pass dangerous?

It is a steep, winding mountain road but generally safe when driven at a sensible pace. Hire an experienced local driver, allow extra time, and check conditions in winter, when snow and ice can occasionally close the 2,260 m summit.

Can you fly from Marrakech to Ouarzazate?

There are occasional flights into Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ), but schedules are limited and often route via Casablanca rather than direct from Marrakech. Because of this, flying frequently saves less time than expected and skips the scenic Atlas crossing.

Can I stop at Aït Ben Haddou on the drive?

Yes — Aït Ben Haddou is about 30 km before Ouarzazate, just off the southern end of the route. Many travellers break the drive there, and some also detour to Telouet Kasbah via the old Ounila valley road.

Should I drive myself or hire a driver?

A private driver or organised tour is recommended over the pass: it lets you enjoy the scenery, stop at viewpoints and kasbahs, and avoid the stress of the switchbacks. It is also good value when the cost is shared among a group.
