Ouarzazate, Skoura & the Dadès: 3 Days of Kasbahs, Roses & Gorges

A kasbah-and-gorge run east of Ouarzazate rather than a desert dash: Aït Ben Haddou, the Skoura palm grove and Kasbah Amridil, the Valley of the Roses and the red switchbacks of the Dadès, with the option to reach the Todra Gorge before turning back.

Your 3-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Aït Ben Haddou & east to Skoura

Start 30 km west of Ouarzazate at the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou (about a 30-minute drive), crossing the river to climb through the earthen houses to the agadir at the top. Back through Ouarzazate for the Taourirt Kasbah, then east about 45 minutes to the Skoura oasis to overnight among the palms.

    • Aït Ben Haddou UNESCO ksar
    • Taourirt Kasbah
    • Skoura palmeraie
    • Kasbah guesthouse stay

    Day 2

Kasbah Amridil, the Valley of the Roses & the Dadès

Tour Kasbah Amridil in the Skoura palm grove — one of the best-preserved kasbahs in the south, long pictured on the old 50-dirham note — then drive up toward Kelaat M'Gouna and the Valley of the Roses, where Persian damask roses are harvested in spring for rosewater. Continue into the Dadès Valley (roughly 2 hours from Ouarzazate in total) to its famous hairpin switchbacks and the 'Monkey Fingers' rock for the night in the gorge.

    Day 3

Todra Gorge option & return to Ouarzazate

Choose a morning walk on the Dadès river floor, or push east about an hour to Tinghir and the sheer Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls rise some 300 m above a narrow oued. Then drive the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs back west through Skoura to Ouarzazate, arriving by late afternoon.

    • Dadès river walk
    • Todra Gorge (optional)
    • Tinghir oasis
    • Return via the kasbah trail

Good to know

Practical notes

  • This is an east-of-Ouarzazate kasbah-and-gorge loop, not a desert trip — Skoura is about 45 minutes out and the Dadès roughly 2 hours, so the days stay short.
  • The Valley of the Roses is at its best in late April and May, around the rose harvest and the rosewater distilleries; the rose festival is usually held in early May.
  • Kasbah Amridil charges a small entry fee paid in cash dirhams at the door; the Dadès and Todra gorge-floor walks are flat and suit most fitness levels.
  • Adding the Todra Gorge on day three makes for a longer final drive — say so when booking and we'll pace the day accordingly.

Frequently asked

Is this a desert trip?

No — it deliberately stays in the kasbah-and-gorge country east of Ouarzazate rather than driving to the Sahara. You get oases, the Valley of the Roses and the Dadès (and optionally Todra) gorges without the long run to Merzouga or Zagora. Add a night if you want to continue to the dunes.

Can you see both the Dadès and Todra gorges in three days?

Yes, briefly. This plan settles in the Dadès on day two and offers Todra as a day-three option about an hour further east before turning back. To walk both gorges at a relaxed pace plus the desert, the 5-day gorges loop is the better fit.

When is the best time for the Valley of the Roses?

Late April into May, when the damask roses are harvested around Kelaat M'Gouna and the rosewater distilleries are working; the rose festival typically falls in early May. The kasbahs and gorges are rewarding year-round.
