On the eastern edge of Ouarzazate stands Taourirt, one of the finest kasbahs in southern Morocco and a former seat of the Glaoui dynasty. Behind its tapering earthen towers lies a warren of courtyards and decorated rooms. Here is what to explore.

The heart of Taourirt is the cluster of rooms once used by the Glaoui and their household, with carved plaster, painted cedar ceilings and small windows framing the desert. The maze of stairways and terraces rewards slow exploration.
The grandest rooms keep their geometric zellij, stucco friezes and painted woodwork, a reminder of the wealth the Glaoui drew from controlling caravan routes. Restoration backed by UNESCO has stabilised the most ornate interiors.
From the upper terraces you look across the old kasbah quarter and out toward the Atlas foothills. The view shows how the fortress dominated the river crossing and the town that grew up around it.
Below the main kasbah, a still-inhabited district of earthen alleys, small mosques and craft workshops spreads toward the river. A short walk here gives a sense of daily life in the shadow of the old stronghold.
Directly across the road, the Musée du Cinéma fills a former studio with props, cameras and reconstructed sets. It pairs neatly with the kasbah and explains Ouarzazate's reputation as Morocco's film capital.
Workshops around Taourirt sell carpets, silver and pottery, and several women's co-operatives welcome visitors to watch weaving and learn the meaning of Berber motifs. It is a relaxed place to shop without medina pressure.
Taourirt's clustered towers and crenellated walls are at their best in low morning or evening light, when the rammed earth turns deep gold. The full facade is easily framed from the road or the open ground in front.

Yes, there is a modest entrance ticket for the restored section of the kasbah. Hiring a local guide at the entrance is optional but worthwhile, as few of the rooms are labelled and the layout is easy to get lost in.
Around an hour is enough to tour the restored apartments, climb to the terraces and walk part of the old quarter. Adding the Cinema Museum across the road makes a comfortable half-day in central Ouarzazate.
