Why Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas is the great barrier that separates Marrakech from Ouarzazate and the pre-Sahara; the Tizi n'Tichka road carves over it, and the snow on these peaks is exactly what feeds the palm oases and kasbah rivers on the southern side. Within 60 minutes of leaving the city you can be in Imlil at 1,740m, among Berber villages, walnut and cherry orchards, and trails climbing to Jbel Toubkal — North Africa's highest mountain at 4,167m. The range works as a day trip, a weekend at a mountain lodge, or a proper 2–3 day trek with guides and mules before you continue south to the desert.

What to see

Highlights of Atlas Mountains.

01

Imlil & the Toubkal valley

Base village for trekkers; lunch at Kasbah du Toubkal, walk to Aroumd or up to Sidi Chamharouch.

02

Summit Jbel Toubkal

Two-day mule-supported ascent (4,167m) — non-technical in summer, ice axe and crampons in winter.

03

Ourika valley & Setti Fatma

Easier day trip closer to Marrakech: river-bank lunch, Berber market on Mondays, seven waterfalls walk.

04

Asni & Ouirgane

Lower-altitude villages with boutique mountain lodges on the Marrakech side — good for non-trekkers and a soft landing before the Tichka crossing south.

FAQ

Atlas Mountainscommon questions.

Can you climb Toubkal without a guide?+

Since the 2018 incident a licensed guide is mandatory. We use a small panel of certified local mountain guides we've worked with for years.

Is the Atlas worth visiting if I don't trek?+

Absolutely — Asni, Ouirgane and Ourika all offer comfortable lodge stays with short walks. Many travellers spend a night in the range simply because it lies on the way over the Tizi n'Tichka toward Ouarzazate and the kasbahs.
