Why Casablanca

Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and main international hub (CMN), and for many southern itineraries it is simply where the journey to Ouarzazate and the desert begins. It is not the kasbah Morocco of postcards but a working modern metropolis: art-deco architecture from the French period, an Atlantic corniche and the staggering Hassan II Mosque rising over the water. Most travellers transit through on the way to Marrakech and the Tizi n'Tichka; a half-day is enough to see it properly before pressing on.

FAQ

Casablancacommon questions.

Is Casablanca worth visiting?+

For most leisure travellers a half-day around the Hassan II Mosque and downtown is enough. Save your nights for Marrakech and the kasbah south — Casablanca is best treated as the gateway rather than the destination.

Should I fly into Casablanca or Marrakech for a southern trip?+

Casablanca (CMN) has more long-haul flights; Marrakech (RAK) is closer to the Tizi n'Tichka and the road to Ouarzazate. A common arrangement is to land at CMN, transfer to Marrakech, run the desert loop, and fly home from RAK.
