Why Tangier
Tangier sits where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, with Spain visible across the strait on a clear day — the northern doorway into Morocco, just as Ouarzazate is the southern door of the desert. Long an international city, administered jointly by foreign powers from 1923 to 1956, it drew Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. Today it is the polished modern gateway to the north: a 35-minute ferry from Tarifa, a 2h drive to Chefchaouen and a 4h drive (or 2h train) to Fes. Travellers arriving here usually work the north before turning south toward the kasbah country.

Yes, especially if you're entering Morocco from Spain or building a northern loop (Tangier → Chefchaouen → Fes). As the far-northern gate it sits at the opposite pole from Ouarzazate, so it usually anchors a separate northern leg rather than the southern desert route.
Two nights is the sweet spot — one day for the kasbah and medina, one for Cap Spartel and a long lunch.
