Fint Oasis: a hidden green canyon and slow desert days

Twenty minutes from Ouarzazate, the dry plateau cracks open into a ribbon of palms and running water. After the kasbahs and the studios, Fint feels like exhaling. Here is how to spend a weekend.

Fint hides in plain sight. Barely 17 km south of Ouarzazate, the rocky hamada suddenly drops into a green canyon where the Asif n'Fint river feeds a dense palmery and a string of small Berber villages. After the dust of the kasbah trail and the bustle of the film studios, the sound of running water and the shade of the date palms feel like a reward. The oasis is unhurried, the families farm as they always have, and the silence at night is absolute.

The palmery and the river

The first thing to do is walk. A path follows the river through the date palms, past plots of barley and vegetables fed by hand-dug channels, with the red canyon walls rising on either side. In spring and after rain the river runs clear over the stones and you can paddle or swim in the deeper pools. It is the simplest pleasure in the south — green, cool and quiet — and we fold it into our activity extensions for travellers who want a slow day.

The villages and the people

Several small earthen villages line the canyon, home to Amazigh (Berber) families who farm the palmery and keep a few goats. A long lunch in a family guesthouse — tagine, bread baked that morning, mint tea on a terrace over the river — is the heart of a Fint weekend. Come with a local guide and the visit becomes a real exchange rather than a drive-through.

For all its quiet, Fint is no secret to film crews: its palms and canyon have doubled for African and Arabian scenes in productions shot out of Ouarzazate, so you may recognise the light.

Slow days, warm and green

Fint is best treated as a place to do very little. Read in the shade, wade in the river, nap through the heat of the afternoon, then walk the palmery again as the light turns gold. The river is fullest in spring; in summer the shade keeps it bearable; in winter the days are mild and the nights cold. Whichever season, the oasis itself is the headline — a green seam in a vast dry land.

Reaching the oasis

The tarmac runs out a few kilometres before Fint, and the remaining track is rocky and crosses the riverbed, so a 4×4 makes the trip easy and an ordinary car can struggle. We always use a 4×4 with a local driver who knows the crossings — especially important after rain, when the riverbed can flood. It is a short, beautiful drive that most day-trippers never make, which is part of the appeal. Read more on our Ouarzazate destination page.

Where to stay

Stay either in one of the simple family-run guesthouses right in the oasis — for the silence, the river and a sky full of stars — or back in a comfortable kasbah hotel in Ouarzazate, a short drive away, if you want more amenities and to combine Fint with the studios and Aït Ben Haddou. The best oasis lodges are easygoing and built of earth, without fuss. We maintain a shortlist with honest assessments of what each suits.

A brief practical note: desert nights are cold from autumn to spring even when the days are warm, so bring a layer. Good shoes for the rocky path, water, and a swimsuit in the warmer months make the difference between a great day and an awkward one.

Getting there and when to go

Fint is twenty minutes from Ouarzazate town by 4×4, so it works beautifully as a half-day, an overnight, or a calm bookend to the kasbah circuit. We always use a local driver who knows the track. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal: warm days, mild evenings and a green, flowing oasis. Summer is hot but the palms and river offer relief, and winter days are pleasant though the nights are cold. Avoid the canyon in heavy rain because of flash-flood risk.

Frequently asked

How far is Fint Oasis from Ouarzazate?

Fint Oasis is only about 17 km south of Ouarzazate, but the last stretch is a rough piste, so it takes around 45 minutes by car and is best reached in a 4×4. Despite being so close to town, the hidden green canyon of the Asif n'Fint river feels a world away — which is exactly why film crews and weekenders love it.

Do you need a 4×4 to reach Fint Oasis?

For comfort, yes. The tarmac runs out a few kilometres before the oasis and the remaining track is rocky and crosses the riverbed in places. A high-clearance 4×4 makes it easy; an ordinary car can sometimes manage in dry weather but risks getting stuck. We always use a 4×4 with a local driver who knows the crossings.

What is there to do at Fint Oasis besides relax?

Fint is mostly about slowing down — walking the palmery, paddling in the river, eating a long lunch and watching the light. Beyond that you can visit the small Berber villages along the canyon, meet the families who farm the date palms, and (in season) swim in the river pools. It has also doubled for African and Middle Eastern scenes in several films shot from Ouarzazate.

Where should you stay around Fint Oasis?

There are a handful of simple, charming guesthouses and small eco-lodges right in the oasis, run by local families, plus more comfortable kasbah hotels back in Ouarzazate a short drive away. We work with a shortlist at both — an oasis guesthouse for the silence and the stars, or a town hotel if you want more comfort and to combine Fint with the studios and Aït Ben Haddou.

Is Fint Oasis safe for solo travellers?

Yes. Fint is a quiet, welcoming farming oasis and visitors — including women travelling alone — consistently report feeling comfortable, especially when staying in a family-run guesthouse. The usual rural caution applies: come with a local driver who knows the track, and avoid the riverbed in flash-flood conditions after rain.

When is the best time to visit Fint Oasis?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal — warm days, mild evenings and a green palmery. The river is fullest after the spring melt and rains. Summer is hot but the palm shade and the river offer relief, and winter days are pleasant though nights are cold. Avoid the canyon during heavy rain because of flash-flood risk.
