Things to do · Ouarzazate
The fortified village of Aït Ben Haddou is the most famous ksar in Morocco — a cluster of earthen kasbahs rising above the Ounila river, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a film set known the world over. About 30 km from Ouarzazate, it is the region's essential visit. Here is how to make the most of it.

A ksar — a fortified village of packed-earth (pisé) kasbahs — on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Most of its dramatic towers date from the 17th century onward, though the site has been inhabited far longer.
The old village sits across the Ounila riverbed from the modern one. In low water you can cross on stepping stones or sandbags; after rain you may use the small footbridge. It is a short but uphill walk through the lanes to the top.
Climb through the kasbahs to the communal agadir (fortified granary) crowning the hill, for a sweeping view over the palm groves, the river and the Anti-Atlas beyond — the classic photograph of the site.
Aït Ben Haddou has appeared in films and series from Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator to Game of Thrones (as Yunkai and Pentos). Local guides love pointing out the exact filming spots.
Early morning and late afternoon give the warmest light on the earthen walls and the fewest crowds. Midday summer heat is intense and shadeless, so start early or come for sunset.
A few kilometres on, the kasbah of Tamdaght (with its stork-topped towers) and, further up the Ounila valley, the crumbling Glaoui palace-kasbah of Telouet make a rewarding extension on the old road toward Marrakech.
Aït Ben Haddou is about 30 km northwest of Ouarzazate, roughly a 30–40 minute drive, making it an easy half-day or a relaxed full day combined with Tamdaght and the film studios.
The ksar has featured in many productions, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Mummy and Game of Thrones, where it appeared as the cities of Yunkai and Pentos.
Early morning or late afternoon is best, for soft light on the earthen kasbahs and to avoid both the crowds and the harsh, shadeless midday heat, especially in summer.
