Things to do in Ouarzazate

Tucked in the High Atlas off the old Tizi n'Tichka road, the Kasbah of Telouet is one of Morocco's great might-have-beens — a faded mud-brick stronghold of the Glaoua (el Glaoui) clan whose crumbling exterior hides astonishingly ornate reception rooms. Once a seat of power that controlled a key Atlas pass, it has stood largely abandoned since the family's fall in the 1950s. Here is what to know before you visit.

10 experiences

The best of Ouarzazate

01About

What it is

A former palace-kasbah of the Glaoua, a Berber clan from the High Atlas. From a base at Telouet they grew into one of the most powerful families in early-20th-century Morocco, controlling the old caravan and salt routes over the mountains.

02History

The Glaoui story

The clan's most famous figure, Thami El Glaoui, became Pasha of Marrakech in the early 20th century and a major power-broker under the French Protectorate. After his fall and death in the mid-1950s, around Moroccan independence, the family's fortunes collapsed and Telouet was left to decay.

03Highlights

Faded outside, ornate inside

Telouet is famous for the contrast: a weathered, partly ruined pisé (packed-earth) exterior gives way to surviving reception rooms of remarkable richness — intricate zellige tilework, finely carved stucco, and painted cedar ceilings, much of it from the first half of the 20th century.

04Highlights

The reception rooms

Only a portion of the vast complex is kept up; the rest is a maze of collapsing earthen walls open to the sky. The restored salons show how lavish the kasbah once was, a striking jolt after the bare passages you cross to reach them.

05Setting

The setting

The kasbah sits in a high mountain valley near the village of Telouet, with bare Atlas peaks and a patchwork of fields and a small kasbah-dotted landscape around it. The drive in, off the main pass, is part of the appeal.

06Getting there

Where it sits on the map

Telouet lies off the old Tizi n'Tichka road — the original route over the Atlas before today's modern pass — on a side road roughly 20 km from the main road, between Marrakech and the Aït Ben Haddou area. A surfaced side road now leads to the village.

07Itinerary

Combine with Aït Ben Haddou

A popular way to visit is on the scenic back road down the Ounila valley, linking Telouet with Aït Ben Haddou (passing the Tamdaght kasbah). It makes a memorable, slower alternative to the main highway between Marrakech and Ouarzazate.

08Practical

How long to allow

The kasbah itself is a fairly quick visit — often under an hour to walk the open ruins and the restored rooms. Factor in the detour off the main road and, if you take the Ounila valley route on toward Aït Ben Haddou, a good half to full day overall.

09Practical

Visiting and a guide

There is usually a small entry arrangement on site (check current details locally), and a caretaker may show you through the decorated rooms — worth it for the history and for finding the best-preserved corners. A modest tip is customary.

Photography

The contrast of decay and ornament is the picture here: cracked earthen walls and open sky against jewel-like tile and stucco. Indoor light is dim, so a steady hand helps; the warm exterior light is best in the early morning and late afternoon.

Frequently asked

Who built Telouet Kasbah and why is it abandoned?

It was a stronghold of the Glaoua (el Glaoui) clan, whose chief Thami El Glaoui became Pasha of Marrakech in the early 20th century. After his fall and death in the mid-1950s, around Moroccan independence, the family lost power and the kasbah was largely left to decay.

Where is Telouet and how do you get there?

Telouet is in the High Atlas off the old Tizi n'Tichka road, on a side road roughly 20 km from the main road between Marrakech and the Aït Ben Haddou area. Most visitors come by car as a detour off the main pass, often combined with Aït Ben Haddou.

Can you visit Telouet together with Aït Ben Haddou?

Yes. A scenic back road down the Ounila valley links Telouet with Aït Ben Haddou, passing the Tamdaght kasbah on the way. It is a slower but memorable alternative to the main Marrakech–Ouarzazate highway.

What is there to see inside Telouet Kasbah?

The draw is the contrast between the crumbling earthen exterior and the surviving reception rooms, which keep their intricate zellige tilework, carved stucco and painted cedar ceilings. A caretaker often guides visitors through the restored salons.
