Above the modern town, the crumbling old quarter and a kasbah linked to the Glaoui clan recall Tinghir's caravan-era past. Its earthen ramparts give wide views over the palmeraie and the valley.
Just north of town, the Todra Gorge funnels between sheer limestone walls rising up to around 300 metres. The flat road and footpath along the riverbed make the narrows easy to reach from Tinghir.
Tinghir's old quarter includes a former Jewish kasbah, or mellah, a reminder of the community that once lived and traded here. Guided walks recount the history of the town's mixed heritage.
Tinghir and the surrounding villages are known for hand-knotted Berber rugs, and women's co-operatives welcome visitors to see wool carded, dyed and woven. It is a chance to learn the symbolism of the patterns from the weavers.
