Overview

South from Ouarzazate down the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river and its greatest palm oasis — to Zagora and the desert beyond, with a camel sunset and a night under canvas in the dunes before looping back through the kasbahs.

The Draa is Morocco's longest river and the classic road to the Sahara from Ouarzazate. We follow it south through Agdz and a near-continuous oasis of date palms and mud-brick ksour to Zagora — the old caravan town with the worn 'Timbuktu, 52 days' sign. Beyond, the sand begins.

We ride camels into the dunes near Tinfou (or onward toward M'Hamid for the wilder Erg) for sunset and a night at a Berber camp — drums, a fire and a sky full of stars. The third day returns up the Draa with time for the kasbahs of Agdz and Tamnougalt. A real desert overnight without the full multi-day Chigaga commitment.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

How is this different from the Chigaga or Merzouga trips?

This is the shorter Draa/Zagora gateway — a real desert overnight in three days from Ouarzazate. Erg Chigaga (out past M'Hamid) and Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) are bigger ergs that need 4–5 days for the round trip. We can quote those too if you have the time.

What is the camp like?

A Berber camp in the dunes: proper beds in tents, shared or private depending on your booking, dinner and breakfast included, and a fire with music. It's comfortable but simple — bring a layer, as desert nights get cold.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate. Expect 2–4 hours of light walking per day and one or two longer driving days on mountain and desert roads. We pace days carefully and stop often.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or the Rose Valley harvest, book 6–10 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
