Can you really do Ouarzazate as a day trip from Marrakech?
Yes, and plenty of people do — but it helps to know what you are signing up for. Marrakech to Ouarzazate is about 200 km over the Tizi n'Tichka, the High Atlas pass that climbs to around 2,260 m. That is roughly four hours of driving each way on a road that is essentially one long succession of bends. A round-trip day, with even a short look around, works out at about 10–12 hours door to door.
In practice, most "Ouarzazate day trips" sold from Marrakech are really Aït Ben Haddou day trips — the famous ksar sits about 30 km before the town, so it is the natural turnaround point, and Ouarzazate itself gets a quick drive-through at best. What do you miss by not staying over?
The first casualty of a day trip is the light. A round trip from Marrakech puts you at Aït Ben Haddou in the flat middle of the day, exactly when the tour buses arrive, rather than at sunrise or sunset when the earthen towers glow and the crowds thin. The second casualty is everything in Ouarzazate itself — the Taourirt Kasbah, the Cinema Museum and the Atlas Film Studios, none of which you have time to see properly if you also have to drive back over the mountains before dark.
And driving the Tizi n'Tichka twice in one day is genuinely tiring. The bends that are exhilarating on the way out feel a lot longer on the way back, and the last thing you want is to be tackling a mountain pass while exhausted at the end of a long day. What does one night in Ouarzazate unlock?
One night changes the trip completely. You break the long drive into two halves, arrive in time for Aït Ben Haddou at golden hour, and have the next morning for the town — the Taourirt Kasbah, the Cinema Museum and the Atlas Film Studios that earned the place the nickname "Ouallywood". A single, unhurried night is the difference between ticking Ouarzazate off and actually seeing it.

What do two or three nights unlock?
This is where Ouarzazate stops being a stopover and becomes a base. With two or three nights you can fan out into the kasbah country that surrounds it:

Both are good, and the right answer depends on your priority. Ouarzazate town has the most hotels, restaurants and services, and it is the more central base for onward day trips to the gorges and the desert. The cluster of kasbah guesthouses opposite Aït Ben Haddou, on the other hand, puts you a few minutes' walk from the ksar — which means you can be standing in front of it at sunrise or sunset, long after the day-trippers have driven back to Marrakech. A round-trip day trip makes sense if your schedule genuinely pins you to Marrakech for both nights and you simply want to lay eyes on Aït Ben Haddou. But if you have any flexibility, the better move is a one-way crossing that keeps going — over the Tizi n'Tichka, a night in or near Ouarzazate, then onward to the gorges, the Draa Valley or Merzouga, looping back to Marrakech only at the end.
